Guilford County Schools (NC) is reducing unpaid lunch debt which was highlighted in a recent News-Record article. The total charges for 2012 have been cut by more than half from 2011. In 2011, total charges were $283,304, but in 2012 it has been cut to only $122,280. The plan was implemented after unpaid meal debt reached almost $500,000. The students are now only allowed a charge up to $17.50 before a cheaper meal of cheese toast for breakfast and fruit and vegetables for lunch will be offered. This is an impressive reduction in cafeteria debt. Way to go, Guilford County!
